by Katherine Brewer:

Snead State Community College Department of Theatre will present Rodgers & Hammerstein's Oklahoma! This is the first collaboration of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II and remains, in many ways their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre still being followed today.

Set in a Western Indian Territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story and that this new life they will eventually begin together will be in a brand-new state called OKLAHOMA!
Breaking all Broadway box office records when it opened in 1943, Oklahoma! was the first collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein - the legendary team who went on to create Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music.

Oklahoma! winner of a special Pulitzer prize, changed the face of stage musicals by telling an emotional story through music, lyrics and dance as never before.

Oklahoma! first opened at the St. James Theatre in New York on the last day of March 1943. The New York run lasted five years and 2,212 performances; the original investment of $90,000 was paid back 2,500 percent.

This is the 3rd production of Oklahoma! Snead Theatre has produced. "The show talks about a new generation of Americans with the development of a Brand New State." say director Johnny Brewer who led a very successful run of the 2nd production 10 years ago in 2001. "It’s a new generation of folks participating in the 2011 edition. The message is as clear both on and off stage as it was when Snead first presented Oklahoma! in 1994. Work hard, be friends and be happy no matter what life has thrown at you."
